Liar Liar Pants on Fire
by Hayley Schiffer
Co-directed by Eleanor Willis and Gabriela Chanova
A young black woman has been encouraged by her university to attend a therapy session provided by them. They’ve noticed something’s wrong. Everyone’s noticed. She’s the eldest immigrant daughter, so she has a lot to say, she’s been carrying a lot. But– black people don’t do therapy, it’s a betrayal! BUTTTT she is a talker, so the audience gets an EARFUL. It’s first year of university and she’s been juggling: her deepest fears, a relationship, London (the strange place it is), friendships and uni while also navigating family secrets due an emotional reunion with an unexpected stranger. She has to go to dinner with a man (I know she’s brave!). She has never met him before. I promise you it is not what you think. Time for her to re-adjust her entire foundation, how does one do that? She doesn’t know. So, let’s start with something easy, like dinner. Say Friday 7pm? Then next a few regular scheduled breakdowns. A likkle jokey-joke here, there and everywhere. Then denial. Thennnn therapy?

This solo show follows Eve, a phone sex operator with absolutely nothing left to lose, as she navigates a tumultuous sex life and the growing fear that she might not be attracted to men at all. Equal parts comedy and tragedy, this play unpacks compulsory heterosexuality, liberal feminism, and the way love persists even when we are afraid to call it what it is.
