Overview

A work-in-progress presentation of Rosamund Gravelle’s new play Love Is Never Wasted.

Love Is Never Wasted is set in a stiflingly isolated & mysterious industrialised facility characterised by the maintenance of heavy-duty pipes & spigots.

Jar has decided to stay on after their shift chatting to Doll who has just started theirs, and thankfully the shift has seen only the one Runner, so far. As they chat, Doll slowly opens up to Jar about a loss, but stops wanting to carry out their duties, forcing Jar to choose to stay to make sure Doll doesn’t explode the pipes & lose all the water left in the world, or leave and trust Doll to do the right thing.  Will Doll let pipes explode and lose all the water? Can Jar take a step out of their comfort zone? Or has Doll chosen to be a Runner and leave their world behind, or will they stay with Jar and friendship and what they have always done? And will the mysterious Runner really destroy everything or possibly save them all?

Love Is Never Wasted – a highly commended play by the National Theatre’s script panel – is a disconcerting absurdly comic play, full of heart, provoking questions about what we accept & why – a Gen Z “Waiting for Godot” for the end of the capitalist age.
