Overview

Lost Property Hotel

By Áine King

Sound design – Fionn Hodgson

Publicity design – Antony Hodgson

Mags is a world-weary hotel housekeeper sorting through the season’s lost property. She plays all the characters, drawing the audience into the stories behind each lost item and revealing how they are all connected. Archie is looking for his ancestry but keeps losing the biscuit tin holding his grandfather’s ashes. Lynda is looking for romance, but lives in a fantasy, cos-playing with her uncle’s Celtic brooch. Davy is looking for a story, trying to write a novel on his granny’s old vintage typewriter. Only the audience know that these people and objects are all connected. Is fate is about to reunite them all? Much of the play is based on the true-life experiences of my grandmother and her sisters who were from Bethnal Green. They were orphans, separated and shipped abroad as British Home Children. The character Gerald is my father who is now nearly ninety and helped in my research. A lot of my work aims to tell stories like this about extraordinary ordinary people, which are often lost.
